Sewage treatment plants found dysfunctional again

Vrindavan, 2017.06.18 (VT): In one hand the UP State Government was laying sewage pipe lines on the river bed to facilitate the sewerage transportation from upstream of Keshi Ghat to its downstream under the Riverfront Development Plan, but it hasn’t been able to manage the existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Sewage Pumping Stations (STPs) , so far.
All the drains of Vrindavan are going into Yamuna constantly. During high profile visits the drains are tapped and after the inspection is over the sewer is again released into the river.
On Saturday, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Mathura Shri Ravindra Kumar expressed his discontent with Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam and the newly created Mathura – Vrindavan Nagar Nigam concerning poor state of functioning of city’s Sewage Treatment facilities.
An inspection of the Sewerage Treatment Plants and Sewerage Pumping Stations was conducted on Saturday by the ADM, who is also the Nodal Officer to look after the Yamuna Pollution matters. He was accompanied by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner Dr. Brajesh Kumar.

First they went to Kalidah Sewerage Pumping Station (SPS), where they found that the plant was completely dysfunctional, and no trace of any activity was found there. There was no diesel in the Generator and the filth was spread in the entire SPS. Even the starter room, the center for operating the Sewage Pumping Station was found dirty. The Kalidah SPS was entrusted to be operated by UP Jal Nigam’s contractor M/S  R. K. Engineers, but none of its staff were found present there.
After that they went to the Main Pumping Stations near Pagal Baba Temple, which were also found to be not functioning. The reason cited by the people present there for the non- functioning of the STP was the leakage in the main pipe line which carries city’s sewage. After that they went to visit Masani and Dairy farm SPS. The Municipal Officers said that the capacity of the STP’s are less than the sewerage generated in Vrindavan and Mathura.
According to the sources, domestic sewage goes directly to Yamuna via several drainages. The STP’s were established in the town under the Yamuna Action Plan in the late nineties to check the sewer going into the river Yamuna. Since then the STP’s never functioned satisfactorily. Another STP was established under the Samagra Vikas Yojna by the then Mayavati Government in 2012, which is yet to be handed over to the Municipal Corporation. (MS)
