Vrindavan, 2017.10.04 (VT): The students of Bhaktivedanta Vaishnavi Gurukul (BVG) in Nandgaon participated in the nationwide celebration of Gandhi Jayanti. In solidarity with the Clean India Campaign of our Honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the gurukul girls marched around Nandgaon carrying banners with messages calling for a clean and healthy India.
The girls picked up all the garbage from the roadsides and then proceeded to clean the holy lake Pavan Sarovar. After cleaning the pathway leading to Nand Bhavan, the girls gave a street theatre performance portraying the environmental situation in Nandgaon and what can be done to change it.

Since the founding of the free gurukul for the girls in Nandgaon, its director, Raghunath Das, started this drive to propagate awareness among school children and local villagers on the importance of hygiene and sanitation. He encouraged the locals to keep their surroundings clean and to minimize and avoid the use of plastic and non-biodegradable materials. He also taught them to recycle and reuse things.
“These cleaning campaigns are wonderful for bringing awareness to the public,” says Raghunath, “But more important is the environmental education these girls receive in school. Only by making people aware of future consequences can we bring an end to pollution.
“We are also planning awareness seminars for local buisnesses, from the big sweet distributors and restaurants to small street hawkers, where we discuss waste management, the consequences of using plastics and other non-biodegradable items.
“I have personally given seminars to people of various religious communities to elicit support. We recently got in touch with Eco Sikh and Islamic Relief. In November these groups will come to Braj to help organize an awareness camp to promote the benefits of govar gas and organic farming. The camp will be held in Nandgaon this year, and later we plan to expand with seminars in Goverdhan, Barsana and Vrindavan. We also organize various projects with international NGOs like The Bhumi Project, Our Voices and Green Faith.”
