Gurus weigh into the monkey debate. As monkeys continue their daily routine of taking objects and waiting for a bribe to get them back, stealing from shops and stealing food from people’s hands  – giving a bite in case of any resistance – the debate about what should be done (and whether in fact anything needs to be done) continues. As well as politicians and local leaders, Bhagavatam speakers are also speaking out about the monkey issue. At a recent lecture in Vrindavan, Ananda Murthi Guruma said that anyone who is troubled by monkeys is not a devotee because the monkeys learnt their trickiness from Krishna, so you can’t beat them. The Guruma also said that we have taken the forest from the monkeys so it is humans’ fault that they are living in the town. This statement is, however, debatable. Studies show that monkey numbers are increasing every year.

Politicians unable to make Vrindavan Mokshadham. The tradition of bringing bodies to Vrindavan to be cremated is as old as anyone can remember. For years, politicians have talked about a ‘Mokshadham’ project, which would provide a designated area for families to gather and perform funeral rights. The suggestion for the project was first made 22 years ago by the Vrindavan Vikas Samiti. Due to a land dispute, the case went to the high Court, and was finally cleared in 2012. The Mayawati government created a proposal to construct a Mokhsadham on 1600 sq. ft. grounds at a cost of 1.15 crores, however, the project did not get underway in Mayawati’s time, and it was not undertaken during the outgoing chairman Mukesh Gautam’s term.  Read more (Hindi)
