Barsana, 2015.12.22 (VT): The Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority has sanctioned Rs. 2.25 crore for planting trees in Govardhan Parikrama and Vrindavan. The fund has been allotted as a compensation for trees to be cut in the path of the ropeway.
The Ladliji Temple in Barsana will soon have a rope-car system to assist pilgrims in reaching the temple without climbing the stairs. The court has asked to plant 10 times the number of trees to be cut for the ropeway.
Currently, the devotees have to climb 172 steps to reach the temple situated at a height of 45 meters, which causes inconvenience to the old, the infirm, and children. The ropeway has been envisioned as a solution by the District administration.
The ropeway will pass through three villages including Barsana. The villagers are very happy and see it as a developmental project of the area, whereas the environmentalists find it to be a threat to the natural ambience of the town.
“It is ridiculous that fully grown ancient trees will be cut in Barsana and new saplings will be planted to replace them. These so called developmental projects are conceptualized only to pave way for the real estate business,” said Madhumangal Shukla from the Braj Vrindavan Heritage Alliance.
Shri Ram Narayan Brajwasi, a senior priest from Vrindavan said, “There is no need of a ropeway project there as cars can go directly to the top of the hill. Moreover the ‘doli wallahs’ who carry the old and handicapped to the temple on their shoulders will lose their jobs.”
