Vrindavan, 2017.01.03 (VT) As one of several themed tours, the UP government is set to create a ‘Krishna circuit’ so that pilgrims can easily travel around the main places of pilgrimage associated with Sri Krishna. The Krishna circuit was developed by the Ministry of Tourism’s Swadesh Darshan Scheme and has been approved by the Central Government.
The Krishna Circuit includes 12 destinations spread across 5 states. The destinations covered are: (i) Gujarat: Dwarka (ii) Rajasthan: Nathdwara, Jaipur and Sikar (iii) Uttar Pradesh: Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Gokul, Nandgaon and Govardhan (iv) Odisha: Puri
There will also be a Ramayana Circuit which will cover 11 places of pilgrimage, spread across 6 States. The covered destinations are: Uttar Pradesh: Ayodhya, Shringhverpur Nandigram and Chitrakoot (ii) Bihar: Sitamarhi, Buxar and Darbhanga (iii) Telangana: Bhadrachalam (iv) Chattisgarh: Jagdalpur (v) Karnataka: Hampi (vi) Tamil Nadu: Rameswaram.
The UP government recently released a booklet listing the most popular tourist destinations in the State. Vrindavan comes in at number 3, beating the Taj Mahal’s popularity among domestic tourists. Goverdhan is listed as the 4th most popular tourist destination, while Mathura is no. 6 and Taj Mahal is no. 5. For international tourists, Taj Mahal gets first place, and Vrindavan is tenth.
Most are in favour of the Government’s promotion of religious tourism, however, the Government recently attracted controversy by failing to include the Taj Mahal in a brochure describing the State’s tourist destinations. CM Yogi Adityanath also came under fire for saying that the Taj Mahal does not represent Indian culture, but the Ramayana and Bhagavadgita do.
