Vrindavan, 2018.01.26 (VT) Yesterday, the pipeline to bring water from the Ganga to Yamuna was declared leak free with water from Ganga reaching at full pressure.
The water pressure tests were carried out in two villages of Raya District – Sihora and Karab. SDM Mahavan Garima Singh along with the SDO of the Gangajal project and experts from Hyderabad conducted tests on the water pressure to ensure that water is not being lost en-route through leakages.
The Gangajal project has been in the making for 12 years. The original deadline for laying the 130km pipeline was March 2012. The deadline for its completion was last shifted from June 2017 to January 2018. One of the reasons for the delay in the pipeline construction was a stay order due to complaints of farmers of the Mant area of Braj about the low rates used to calculate the compensation that they received for the land used to build the pipeline.

The long awaited Gangajal project has been touted as the only way to solve the problem of the lack of water in the Yamuna and the Government’s inability to supply potable water in Braj and Agra. The government supply water in Braj and Agra is too salty to drink, it contains dangerous levels of pollutants and in some places the water is yellow and has a bad odour. The increased supply of water from the Ganga is half of the solution. In order for the people of Braj to receive water that is truly potable, government run drinking water treatment plants are needed.
