Mathura, 2018.03.07 (VT) Women in Mahuan village, near Farah, has no drinking water. The handpumps in the village produce only salty water, which is hardly suitable for bathing and watering plants. Village women are spending up hours per day, walking up to 3 kilometers just to get drinking water for their families.
Mahuan village has a population of 6000. Villagers are complaining that, in the rush to develop tourist services in Braj, politicians have forgotten their village. Village Pradan, Vimlesh Kumari, said that a written complaint about the water supply has been submitted.
Village women spend more than 60 hours per week doing housework and are often expected to bear the entire responsibility for cooking, cleaning and taking care of children and cows. The burden of walking for an hour per day to fetch drinking water increases the work of women who are already overworked and often suffer ill health.
Saline groundwater is a common problem in Braj. The groundwater is naturally salty and salinity is increasing due to farming and deforestation. India is heavily reliant on ground water for household needs and irrigation and many households still do not have running water.
