Vrindavan, 2018.05.15 (VT): In a pilgrimage gone wrong, a father and son ended up being taken to police custody after becoming violent with police officers who did not allow them to drive their car into Vrindavan.
On Saturday night, police redirected the family to the multistory carpark at the entrance of Rukmani Vihar, however Shubham and his father Mahavir Modi, were not ready to agree to the request.
The family, were travelling from their hometown, Jalandhar, Punjab to visit Vrindavan temples. Shubham was driving. Police allege that when the car reached gate and police gave instructions to proceed to the carpark, Shubham stopped the car in the middle of the road. He then got out of the car and started shouting abuse at Police Officer Rakesh. Shubham’s father, Mahavir, joined his son in hurling abuse at the officers.
The father and son threatened to kill the police officers and started pushing them around. Police were kicked and had their uniforms torn. One officer’s badge was torn off. More officers arrived on the scene and took the father-son into custody. Police said that even after they took Mahavir and his son into custody, they did not calm down.
The other family members in the car returned home.
Police stop traffic from entering Vrindavan in order to prevent cars from becoming stuck in hour-long jams. Local cars are allowed in and most tourists co-operate with the request to park outside the town, however, there are some cases where people become insistent that they should be treated as an exception. People begin to argue with police, causing further delays for everyone.
Recently, there have been several cases of road rage against officers. On 2nd May, a tourist flew into a rage after not being allowed to enter Govardhan Parikrama Marg. In another incident, a Delhi resident became abusive towards an officer who was trying to clear a traffic jam at Atala Chungi.
Police regularly close roads on weekends and announce road closures ahead of important festivals.
