SRNGAR KE PAD
‘Vasanti Sringar ki Jhanki’
A glimpse of Yugal Svarupa’s Spring Adornment
Pada – Raga Hori Kaphi
Poet Ghasiramji
[Translators note: this one word, “vasanti”, repeated to qualify every part of this poem, is full of purport. It implies the mood of spring as well as the saffron colour associated with it. Everything about Their Form is described as being vasanti, and of course this season is also known as Vasant, as is the Raga for many of its delightful lyrics and tunes. Its implications are many-bright, inspiring, full of the nectar of loving mood, colourful, exciting, unusual and full of flare. With all this in mind I am using the original word in the translations.]

The astoundingly attractive adornments of the Form of Sri Radha and Sri Krishna, Shyama and Shyam, are full of the colour and mood of spring. The tilt of His peacock crown is vasanti, the lustre of His moon-shaped ornament is vasanti, and the sprightly flirtatiousness of the flute that is on His lips is vasanti. Vasanti indeed are the beautiful ornament on His head that is tucked into His turban, and the earrings in His ears. [1]
The sandalwood paste on Your forehead is vasanti, so is the cloth tied at Your waist. O, Enchanting Sri Krishna, You have taken up residence in my heart and made it vasanti. Vasanti indeed are Your necklace of gunja beads and Your flower garland. [2]
Your hand decorations are vasanti, You walk with such a casual, casual, vasanti gait and all Your garments are vasanti. Even the sweet rhythmic sound of Your anklet bells is vasanti. [3]
Your cowherd companions’ mood is vasanti. The mohochanga, duff and dola drums play a vasanti beat and they are all singing vasanti lyrics. Sri Radhaji is the vasanti chief of all the sakhis. [4]
The Grace of this great love is vasanti, as is its sweet taste and this breaking of all the rules. The poet Ghasiram says that Sri Radha’s vasanti Name is the essence and foundation of everything. [5]

The Sakhis choose a very nice moonstone head ornament and a very nice veil and dress Sri Thakurji in them, then adorn His forehead with a red powder dot. The Poet Padmakara describes how Vishakha ties His hair into a plait and how that Fair Gopi carefully applies collyrium to His eyes. When Lalita Sakhi dresses Krishna in a blouse soaked in saffron water and flower perfumes the Daughter of Sri Vrishabhanu becomes overcome with laughter and hides Her Face in her own veil.
