New Delhi / Vrindavan, 2016.03.23 (V.T): The Green Court has appointed a local commissioner, Shri Rahul Khurana to visit Vrindavan and submit a report on the current status on the Municipal Solid Waste Management and handling in the temple town of Vrindavan. The order came after the petitioner Shri Madhumangal Shukla, who represents the Braj – Vrindavan Heritage Alliance told the National Green Tribunal about the Vrindavan Municipality following unregulated Solid waste disposal process.
On Wednesday, Shri Shukla through his counsel Shri Rahul Choudhary drew the court’s attention to the continuous pollution by the indiscriminate dumping of waste on Yamuna flood plain, and submitted several photographs showing that the garbage was being burnt unscientifically, which was causing severe damage to the environment and the health of the local people living in the vicinity of the land fill site. He also submitted the reports published on the local news dailies about the burning of the garbage in the garbage bins installed in the streets.
The counsel appearing for the Nagar Palika Parishad, Vrindavan informed the court that the civic agency was taking steps to refurbish the pits for the waste to be dumped there. The Municipality alleged in its affidavit that it was a case of personal vendetta of the petitioner, in order to put pressure on the civic body to make his relatives the permanent employees, who were presently working as temporary workers.
After hearing the both sides, the NGT found it necessary to conduct a surprise physical survey of Vrindavan by the local commissioner appointed by the NGT. The local commissioner will make a surprise visit to Vrindavan and submit a comprehensive report on the current scenario of the garbage collection, dumping, transportation and burning of the Municipal Solid Waste in the town.
Shri Madhumangal Shukla said that Vrindavan is a centre of faith for hundreds of thousands of the Krishna devotees. It is the sole responsibility of the Vrindavan Municipality to maintain the sanctity of this holy town. “We welcome the court’s order and will show the local commissioner how the Municipal Solid Waste rules are being violated and the courts orders are flouted in Vrindavan,” said Shri Shukla.
