Vrindavan / Mathura, 2016.03.27: Considering the significance of the peacocks in Vraja, the U.P. Government has approved a proposal of the Peacock Conservation Centre in Vrindavan. The centre be developed at the Van Chetana Kendra between Mathura and Vrindavan.
The first installment of Rs. 10 lac has also already been released by the U.P. Van Nigam to begin the work. Two hectares of land will be developed in the first phase for the Peacock Conservation Centre, in which mounds will be built, vegetation will be improved and water facility for the birds will be made available.
Another proposal of Rupees Ten million has also been sent to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, for the development of a peacock sanctuary on a three hectare of the forest land adjoining to the Van Chetana Kendra.
The Forest department had prepared two proposals for this project. The District Magistrate Shri Rajesh Kumar had sent a proposal of Rupees Twenty lakh for the development of the Peacock Conservation Centre, in two hectares land inside the Van Chetna Kendra. The Uttar Pradesh Van Nigam has approved it and sent 50 percent of the fund to the regional office of the forest department as the first installment. The second proposal is prepared for three acres of land behind the Van Chetna Kendra, for which the proposal has been sent to the MoEF.
An agency from Bengaluru has been employed to make the Detailed Project Report. According to Shri Sanjeev Sharma, the Regional Director of the U.P. Forestry Department, the work on the second project will begin only after the completion of the first project.
The entire area will be developed as a picnic spot. The benches and other facilities will be availed for the people visiting the sanctuary. The visitors will be restricted in some areas. A peacock rescue centre will also be developed inside the five hectare land, where the injured peacocks will be treated. A team of veterinary doctors will regularly visit the rescue centre.
“Peacocks habitats are being destroyed. There is a human invasion of town into the forests and their natural territories are shrinking. Apart from the humans, the growing number of monkeys in the region has become danger for the peacocks. There have been reports of the monkeys killing the peacocks. The cultural connect for the peacocks needs to be revived, so that it can thrive in the region again”, said Shri Dhananjay Gautam, a resident of Vrindavan from his seven generations.
It should be noted that the idea for the peacock sanctuary was first floated by the Braj Vrindavan Heritage Alliance in a meeting with the then Chief Development Officer, Shri Andra Vamsi, who was very inspired by the idea and had promised to realize it.
