Vrindavan, 2016.05.26 (VT): After temperatures in Vrindavan were soaring to the point of being intolerant, Mother Nature decided to give a respite with three days of storms and showers. Though everyone much appreciate the relief, there was a down side to it all.

On Wednesday, heavy winds first raised clouds of dust, making the sky turn brown. Then the winds became even stronger, knocking down trees, billboards (hoardings) and electricity poles in many various parts of the town.

The damage was not really visible until Thursday morning. Parts of the Parikrama Marg were blocked by fallen trees or electricity poles, especially at Shringar Bat, Pani Ghat, Kalidah, Vihar Ghat, etc. Also the effects of the storm could be seen in Raman Reti and Godhulipuram and other parts of the town. Traffic was blocked, but many local people came forward to help clear the debris on the road.

Electricity, water and internet services were disrupted in many areas.

In Vrindavan, where the planting and protection of trees has become an environmental priority, the loss of so many old trees caused great pain to many residents. Said Jagannath Poddar of Friends of Vrindavan, where an old lisoda tree was uprooted by the storm at the FOV office. “I am very sad to see this tree fall. It was my favorite. It beautifully took a form of a cave where one could sit during the scorching heat of summer.”

Two persons, including a child, were killed and as many others injured in incidents of tree and shed collapse during the storms.

“A 10-year-old boy was killed in Barauli village under Baldeo police station on Wednesday when a overhead shed fell on him during a strong dust storm, whereas 42-year-old NaveenSinghal, resident of Kamla Nagar, succumbed to injuries on way to the Nayati Hospital, when during a dust storm, a tree fell on the car he was travelling in,” ADM Ravindra Kumar said, adding that two other members of Naveen’s family injured in the incident and hospitalised are stable.

Naveen’s family was going to Vrindaban to visit Bankey Behari temple when a tree fell on their car on Chatikara Vrindaban road near Akshay Patra, under Vrindaban police station on Wednesday.
