Vrindavan 2016.05.31 (VT): The Irrigation Department has started the preparations to fill a dried-out canal with water. The department has sent a proposal of 27 crore rupees to the city administration in order to make use of the canal, which runs parallel to the Mant Branch Canal or Madhya Ganga Nahar. The plan is to fill the canal with Ganga water that will not only revive it, but also will provide sufficient water in Yamuna via the Harnaul Escape. Harnaul is also sometimes written as Hernol or Harnowl.
The branch canal was dug in the Mant area 20 years ago, starting from the Upper Ganges Canal at Khurja in Bulandshahar district. Two years later, another canal was dug parallel to it, from Bhureka village. This canal joins the main Nahar after covering distance of 21 kilometres. There is an escape also near this point at Harnaul village, that connects it to the Yamuna north of Vrindavan.
Till now, as there was insufficient water even for the original canal, the parallel canal was left dry. The Harnaul Escape looked more like a drain. The City administration acquired acres of land to dig the parallel canal to provide sufficient water for irrigation, but it has never been filled with water to achieve the objective.
Now the Irrigation Department has sent a proposal of 27 crore rupees to revive the parallel canal.
Ravindra Kumar Chaudhary (Admistrative Engineer at Irrigation Department) said that this money will be used to repair the old canal. The canal has a capacity of 627 cusec which will also be used to fill the dried out wells and lakes near the channel. Also, the banks will be developed for use by villagers.
It will also give sufficient water to Harnaul escape as well which was getting hardly 150 cusec of water only against the capacity of 400 cusec. This water will meet Yamuna directly via Harnaul escape.
