Krishna Bhat exemplifies Guru Bhakti

A nice offering for Guru Purnima from Krishnaa Kinkari. The Pushti Marg saints: Chapter 2: Krishna Bhat — Part 6.

Once Sri Gusainji blessed Krishna Bhat by sending him a letter from Gokul, asking him to go there quickly. He sent a Vrajavasi to Ujjain to deliver the message. When Krishna Bhat received it, he first touched it to his forehead out of respect and then opened it. As soon as he had read it, he rewarded the Vrajavasi and then set off for Gokul.

He traveled the first day away from Ujjain together with that very Vrajavasi and another Vaishnava companion. That night as he was sleeping, Krishna Bhat’s Thakurji came to him in a dream and spoke to him and told him that he was not happy at home without him. So Krishna Bhat sent his Vaishnava companion back to Ujjain to tell his wife to do whatever it would take Sri Thakurji happy and that he would come back straight away after meeting Sri Gusainji. The Vaishnava went to Krishna Bhat’s wife and delivered the message.

After traveling a second day, when they reached their camp, Sri Thakurji again spoke to him in a dream, “I am not happy without you.”

Krishna Bhat sent another Vaishnava to his wife saying, “Please serve Sri Thakurji in such a way as to keep him happy.”This message reached her.

But when Krishna Bhat reached the third camp, Sri Thakurji again told him that he was unhappy without him. Krishna Bhat supplicated the Lord, “My Dear Lord! I am only going because Sri Gusainji has called me! It is he who brought me to know of you. It is through his auspices that you rule my heart and have become my responsibility! I did not want to leave you alone at all, but he has been kind anough to summon me and so I cannot be hard-hearted enough to refuse. So, please my dear child! Let me go to Gokul to see Sri Gusainji and I shall return as soon as I can.”

The Thakurji was happy to hear these words and said to Krishna Bhat, “Alright, you may go.” Krishna Bhat arranged for some conciliatory items to be sent to him at home and then continued his journey to Sri Gusainji’s side.

Bhavaprakasha.

Here it is taught that if one has to tarry in one’s seva to the Lord for the sake of the Guru then it is not a devotional obstruction. The Lord is pleased when the Guru is pleased. Sri Thakurji tested Krishna Bhat three times to see how much he loved Sri Gusainji. Krishna Bhat was totally dedicated to Sri Gusainji and therefore did not do exactly as the Lord requested. It was only on seeing his devotee’s determination to serve the Guru that the Lord conceded and gave him permission to go.

When Krishna Bhat arrived, Sri Gusainji was bathing in Sri Yamunaji. Krishna Bhat came there and bowed low to him. Sri Gusainji said, “O Krishna Bhat! So you have come?”

Krishna Bhat very earnestly addressed him, “O Maharaj! You remembered me and called me to you so why would I not come?”

Hearing these words Sri Gusainji was very happy and said, “Krishna Bhat, please bathe!” So he joined his guru in taking bath in Sri Yamunaji and accompanied him into Sri Navaneet Priyaji’s [“the child Gopal who loves fresh butter”] temple. Sri Gusainji went into the inner sanctum to take the offerings from the altar as prasad while Krishna Bhat stood waiting. When the offering had been accepted back, Krishna Bhat immediately ate a big plate of prasad due, which he was allowed to because of his relationship with Sri Nathaji.

When the time arrived, the doors to the temple were opened and, after the Rajbhog arati Sri Gusainji settled Sri Navanitpriyaji down for his afternoon rest and then came to sit in his greeting room. Krishnadas bowed again to Sri Gusainji and sat close to him. Of course Sri Gusainji knows everything there is to know but still he asked of Krishna Bhat, “Is Your Lord reigning comfortably?”

Krishna Bhat confirmed that,by Sri Gusainji’s grace, the Lord was very comfortable. But he added, “When I was leaving, the Lord was a little upset by my coming to you.”

Hearing this Sri Gusainji kept quiet. He then went to partake of prasad, taking Krishna Bhatt with him. There Sri Gusainji asked him, “Why did you not go straight home?” Krishna Bhat replied, “Your letter had come, telling me to come quickly. How can I ignore your wishes? I told Sri Thakurji that I was coming to see you.”

Sri Gusainji said, “You should not do this. Do what Sri Thakurji tells you to do.”

Bhavaprakasha

Why?because Sri Acharyaji has written in his Viveka-dhairyāśraya treatise [‘Wisdom, Perserverance and Refuge’]:

“Pride can be renounced through the realization that one is dependant on the Lord. When there is a special command He will appear in the heart. That exceptional circumstance should be experienced, but it is not related to the physical plane. Therefore one should always follow the Lord’s commands, for this is the righteous path of a servant of the Lord. Krishna Bhat was the servant of Sri Gusainji and therefore took his word as law. Sri Thakurji was pleased by this. In the state of very deep love, ignoring a commnd is not a devotional obstruction.
