Vrindavan 2016.08.02 (VT): Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms at many places in Braj yesterday brought life to a standstill once again. Many people were injured as lightening struck some houses in nearby villages.
The National Highway connecting the city to Delhi and other places was also jammed for hours as rain poured down heavily for more than three hours. Locals also faced problem from water logging on roads, and rainwater entering their shops and houses.
Clouds started hovering the sky from the early morning on Monday and it started raining soon after making paralysing life almost the whole day. Heavy rainfall resulted in waterlogging in main markets and streets.
The old part of Vrindavan was almost two feet under water, and the Mathura markets also had the same problem. Locals said that the poor drainage system is the main cause of the flooding as there is no effective outlet for the rainwater. Many shopkeepers opened their shops late afternoon only to find that their shops had been flooded from rain water.
City Magistrate of Mathura Ram Araj Yadav and ADM (Revenue) Ravindra Singh got to know about the water logging at around 9 am yesterday, near BSA College. Reacting to the information quickly, they reached the spot with a JCB to free the drain from illegal encroachment that were blocking it.
EO Brijesh Kumar said that drains in more areas will also be freed from jamming soon to avoid water congestion on roads.
Record rainfall in July
Downpours like this one have been continuing since the beginning of the monsoon. The district received 550 mm of rainfall in July, which is almost the entire annual average of 650 mm.
