Mathura 2016.08.17 (VT): The second stage of the Namami Gange project, or the National Mission for Clean Ganga, was started from Vrindavan today with a focus on North India. The first stage was launched at Haridwar in July; the next stages of the project will be announced at Kanpur on August 19 and at Varanasi on August 20.
In the ceremony held at the Vrindavan cricket ground on Wednesday, the Mathura Indian Oil refinery also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government, agreeing to use the processed water from Sewer Treatment Plants (STP) for its industrial use.
Later in the month, the Irrigation, Electricity and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship department will also sign similar contracts.
The Namami Gange project was launched on July 7 this year at 104 places with 231 sub-projects. Now the second stage of the project is kick starting from Mathura with a focus on the Yamuna as well. Yamuna being the most important tributary of the Ganga is also included in the plan along with other tributaries like the Kali, Ram Ganga and Sarayu.
Also announced by the Minister was the beautification of 17 ghats in Vrindavan and the construction of public toilets. The 18-km pipeline that will parallel the river will channel waste to the STP that is being built.
All this work will be completed within two years, she said.
The Mathura sub-project is valued at 150 crore rupees. The principal project is a major new state-of-the-art sewage treatment plant. It will be installed to process water for Indian Oil Corporation. This STP will be able to process 15 lakh litres of water per day.
Apart from that, another STP will also be installed at Vrindavan as an initiative of the State Government. A contract with Global Tech will also be signed to develop the riverfront of Yamuna in Mathura and Vrindavan.
Hema Malini (MP from Mathura), Union Minister Uma Bharti (Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation) and Nitin Gadkari (Minister for Road Transport and Highways) participated in the programme. State Forest Minister Durga Prasad Yadav was also present in the programme, along with Harish Kumar (Deputy Manager at Indian Oil Corporation).
