Mathura, 2016.11.01 (VT): Thousands of pairs of brother and sister took holy dip in Yamuna at Vishram Ghat. They prayed for the well being and healthy long life of each other. Over One lakh pilgrim thronged Vishram Ghat of Mathura, to take the holy bath on the day of Bhaiya Dauj. Taking bath on this day at Vishram Ghat has special significance on this day.
Apart from the locals, a large number of pilgrims came from the distant places of the country. The number of the Gujrati pilgrims was more than the others.
Devotees started to gather at the ancient Vishram Ghat before the sunrise. The brothers and sisters held the hands of each other while taking the dip. After taking the bath in Yamuna, the brothers and sisters duo lighted the lamps on Yamuna bank, and worshiped the Holy River.
After that the ‘Tilak ceremony’ was performed, in which the sisters had put tilak on the forehead of the brothers. Then they went to the temple of Yamraj and Yamuna, on the bank ofthe river, to have darshan and worship the Divine brother and sister. They offered ‘bhog’ to the temple and distributed the sweet to the devotees. The entire ceremony signifies the duty of a brother to protect his sister, as well as a sister’s blessing for her brother.
Legend has it that brother and sister bathing in pairs at Vishram Ghat on the occasion get salvation. The boon of salvation was granted by Yamraj after he was pleased by the hospitality of his sister Yamuna.
The administration claimed that the proceedings were held peacefully without the occurrence of any untoward incident.
“Due to strict vigil faultless planning no untoward incident was reported,” said Additional District Magistrate Shri A.K. Awasthi. “Presence of police personnel in plain clothes at the ghats, thwarted incidents of chain snatching, pick-pocketing and petty crimes,” Awasthi claimed.
Owing to restrictions on movement of four-wheelers in the city there was no traffic jam and pilgrims could reach the bathing ghat in time, he said. The trend of bathing this year was different. “In previous years concentration of pilgrims was more during the morning hours between 7 AM and 10 AM. However, this year it continued till evening as the pilgrims paid their obeisance to the holy Yamuna by participating in Shayan Arati,” said Awasthi.
