Maharaas

Vrindavan, October 27th 2015: The festival of Sharad Purnima was celebrated in the temples of Vrindavan on Tuesday to mark the Divine Event of Maharaas Lila. It is believed that Shri Krishna showered the ‘bhakti –ras’ on the Gopis on this day, which has been a main theme for poets and philosophers and still continues to attract the fantasies of the Krishna devotees.
The temples were decorated with lights and flowers. The deities were adorned with white dresses to match with the full moon light. ‘Kheer’ was prepared and left in the moonlight before offering to the deities. The kheer prasadam was later distributed among the devotees.
The different temples had their special way of celebrating the festival. In a rare occasion, Thakur Shri Banke Bihari was adorned with the flute, which is not held by Him on the other days of the year. Thakur Shri Radha Raman gave darshan sitting on the moon made of silver.
‘Bhakti conference’, Recital of the Raas Lila pastime, Raas Lila Kirtan, performance by the Raas Lila troupes were organized in the temple and ashrams of Vrindavan. This day signifies the Divine Event of Maharaas Lila performed by Shri Krishna with his beloved gopis holding multiple forms to please them all.
This festival is considered as the epitome of love between Shri Krishna and his devotees, as the Lord fulfilled the desire of the Gopis by dancing with each of them separately together at the same time by having multiple form. The reason of performing Maharaas by Krishna was to fulfill the commitment made by Him to the devotees on his different incarnations.
There are many legends related to the event of Maharaas in Vrindavan. One of them is about Lord Shiva. As per the legend, when Shri Krishna started playing his flute in the beginning of Raas leela, Lord Shiva got attracted to the sound of flute and went himself to find the source of flute music, when he reached Vrindavan and was about to enter in the Maharas, suddenly he was stopped by Vrinda Devi at the gate and was refused entry as Vrinda Devi said that only gopis are allowed to enter there. Then Lord Shiva disguised himself as gopi and got the entry, but still he was recognized by Krishna who laughed and fulfilled his wish to play raas with him. Since then Lord Shiva is known as Gopeshwar Mahadev.
The Sharad Poornima night is also seen as the night of love and couples come out at night to face the moon and express their love. ‘Bhakti conference’ was organized at Shri Krishna Kripa Dham, Kripa Vilas and some other ashrams.
