Vrindavan, 2016.11.21 (VT): The Vrindavan Municipality, on Monday moved to the Supreme Court challenging the NGT ruling, which asked it to pay compensation for the garbage menace.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had slapped a fine of Rs. 5 lakh on the Mathura District Magistrate for failing to prevent dumping of Solid Waste along the Yamuna River here. A fine of similar amount was also imposed on the executive officer of the Vrindavan Municipality while the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board official in Mathura District was fined Rs. One Lakh.
In its judgment the Green Court restrained the Municipality or any person from burning Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) or other waste in the open in any part of Vrindavan as well as from dumping the waste on the river bed of Yamuna. It had also ordered an immediate ban on use of plastic and polythene in Vrindavan.
The court had also directed the Municipality to identify a site and prepare it properly for the transportation and dumping of such waste. The Municipality had not complied with the order of the court in the given time.

The NGT had appointed a court commissioner, who visited the Vrindavan sites and collected photographic evidence to nail the truth. The NGT had slapped the fine of Rupees 11.5 lakh, after going through the report of the local commissioner.
The Municipality had filed a petition before the NGT to review its order, which was rejected by the court, as it termed the petition was “without substance” and lacked “bona-fides”.
Talking to the media, Shri T. N. Choube, the Executive Officer of Vrindavan Nagar Palika Parishad said, “The garbage situation of Vrindavan has relatively improved, and the penalty was not justified. We sought permission from the State Government to file a review petition in the Supreme Court. After the State Government gave the go ahead we have now filed an appeal with the Apex Court to get the relief.”
