Vrindavan, 2016.12.28 (VT): The shifting of the vegetable market from Loi Bazaar is facing stiff resistance from traders. Loi Bazaar Sabzi Mandi traders have decided to scale up their protest against the shifting of the vegetable market from Loi Bazaar to the new mandi (wholesale market), situated on the Pani Gaon Road near Pagal Baba Mandir.
A new wholesale market has been built near the hundred-bedded government hospital. The Mandi Samiti administration wants to shift the entire Mandi situated in Loi Bazar to the new place. Shopkeepers were served notices by the Secretary of the Mathura Sabzi Mandi Samiti, directing them to vacate the existing mandi (market). They then tried to forcefully shift it with the help of the police, an action which faced stiff resistance from the traders.
A meeting was convened at a venue near Rangji Mandir, with Mahant Madhumangal Sharan Das presiding. The traders demanded that the mandi should not be entirely shifted. A mini mandi should be allowed to run in the existing market.
The new sabzi mandi is 5 kilometers away from Loi Bazar. Most of the temples, ashrams and traditional residential areas are situated near the old sabzi mandi. Residents of Vrindavan will face great inconvenience traveling so far simply to buy vegetables.
Shri Jagdish Prasad Adatiya said, “The old sabzi mandi was established in memory of Vasant Kumar Chakravarti, who was a great freedom fighter. It would be a disregard to such a great soul if the mandi is shifted from here.”
Madhumangal Sharan Das Shukla alleged, “The century-old sabzi mandi is being shifted to favor the real estate mafia. None of the ten shops built in the new sabzi mandi were allotted to the wholesalers who have been in this for several generations.”
“If it is required, [this issue] will be brought to the notice of the court. A Public Interest Litigation will be filed against the atrocities being committed by the administration against the poor vendors,” said Shukla. He condemned the action of forcefully removing the vendors as unreasonable.
Raj Kumar Agarwal, Sundar Nishad, Anirudh Sharma, Pt. Kalicharan Sharma, Madan Mohan Sharma, Rajesh Nishad, Akshay Sharma, Suresh Chand Gulati, Sanjay Gulati, Radha Raman Nishad, Sundar Lal Nishad, Rajkumar, Rajesh, Ram Babu and many other traders were present in the meeting and pledged to fight against this injustice.
