Mathura, 2015.10.31 (TOI): A day when women from across the country observe fasts, praying for the long lives of their husbands, women in the quaint town of Surir in Mathura District, do not celebrate Karva Chauth.
The reason: all and sundry in Surir town, which has a population of 12,000, believe in a three hundred year old curse, when a man was killed for cattle theft on the day his wife observed the fast.
According to this age-old local lore, the woman jumped into the pyre and let out a curse that anybody who observes a fast on this day will loose their husband.
Gripped with the fear of this old curse the women in this town don’t even give a second thought about keeping a fast.
‘I made a lot of preparations for Karwa Chauth. My parents sent lots of things for me for my first festival, but I couldn’t even dress up that day. The people are very strict about the custom and never allow any married women to observe the fast,’ a primary school teacher from Agra, Sapna Singh told the Times of India.
Headman of the Naujheel village told TOI, ‘Soon after the woman jumped into the fire, hundreds of men whose wives observed Karwa Chauth died on the same day.’
‘Even those who have a regular fast on Friday will not keep it since Karwa Chauth falls on this day,’ he adds.
