Vrindavan, 2017.01.18 (VT): A special vigil will be maintained by the Vrindavan Police to prevent the garbage burning in the city. The Vrindavan Municipal Council has asked the Police department to help it nabbing the people, burning the garbage. It has provided the list of places where the garbage is temporarily dumped and the garbage containers are installed.
The apprehension of a surprise visit by the local commissioner assigned by the Green Court has primg-20161031-wa0022ompted the Municipality to direct the crack down on open garbage burning. There are chances that the local commissioner may visit Vrindavan in this month to assess the garbage situation of the holy town.
It should be noted that the municipality, the District Administration, U.P. Pollution Control Board was fined with Rs. 11. 5 lakh after the local commissioner submitted report against the Municipality. The Court Commissioner visited Vrindavan on 26th March 2016, and found the garbage management system collapsing in the town. He found the garbage was dumped indiscriminately on the road sides and was being burnt.
Even after the getting fined by the court, the Municipality continued to violate the direction of the NGT; instead it appealed the Supreme Court of India against the judgment of the green court.
Meanwhile, the NGT sought report from the government counsel on the compliance of its order by giving two weeks time to submit the report.
In its advertisement published in the local dailies, the Vrindavan Municipality has appealed to the people not to burn the garbage. It sought the cooperation of the people to inform the municipality if anyone was seen burning the garbage. It has promised that the identity of the informer will not be disclosed.
Talking to the media, petitioner Madhumangal Shukla said, “Vrindavan Municipality is simply incompetent. Shifting the responsibility to the police can’t solve the problem. The police are already overburdened with several other responsibilities.”
“ No concrete step has been taken to manage the garbage of the town. Even the landfill site where the garbage is supposed to be disposed is empty. The garbage is being dumped on the road side near the helipad. This road is an important road as it connects the Yamuna Express Way with Vrindavan. The sentiments of the devotees are being hurt after seeing the pile of garbage on the entrance of the holy Dham,” added Shukla.
