Vrindavan, 2017.02.01 (VT): Come Vasant Panchami, the holy town of Vrindavan is awash with yellow to welcome the spring. Shri Dham Vrindavan turned yellow and colorful on Wednesday. The fields are lush yellow with mustard flowers in full bloom, temples are decorated with yellow and orange marigold flowers and the people are decked in hues of the bright color. This festivity marked the beginning of celebration of festival of colors in Vrindavan.

A large number of pilgrims arrived in the temple town of Vrindavan for the festivities. Tons of yellow flowers have been used to decorate the temples. Pilgrims had an early morning dip in the Yamuna and applied sandalwood paste on their foreheads.

The festivities began with the music, dance, prayers and the sumptuous bhog prasad in all the major temples of Vrindavan. Devotees thronged in the temples of Radha Raman, Radha Shyam Sundar, Banke Bihari, Radha Vallabh and Shah ji Mandir. The deities were adorned with yellow dresses and decorated withmarigold and mustard flowers.

This temple is famous for its chandeliers, which are kept in a room called ‘Vasanti Kamra’. This particular hall with the chandeliers is opened only twice in a year for visitors during Jhulanotsav and Vasant Panchami.

A long queue was seen outside the temple as thousands of devotees from the villages of Vraja came to have darshan of ‘Chhote Radha Raman’ in the Vasanti Kamra. The entire room is painted yellow and the ceiling and walls are covered with multicolored paintings. The throne, the doors, and several mirrors – some as much as ten feet high – are all gold-plated. Although they are more than 140 years old, they still glitter with amazing grandeur and brightness. The dome-shaped artistically painted ceilings support 15 huge Belgian glass chandeliers. The yellow chandeliers and the fountains are other examples of the room’s creative brilliance.

A grand ceremony was organized at Radha Shyam Sundar Mandir to celebrate the marriage anniversary of Shyam Sundar and Radha Rani. The deity of Radha Rani, manifested in the treasury of the king of Bharatpur in 1580, was brought to Vrindavan to get married with Thakur Shayam Sundar ji worshiped by Shyamananda Prabhu. The marriage took place on the auspicious occasion of Vasant Panchami.

Several devotional events were organized to mark this event. Adhivas Kirtan, Nishant Lila and Kunja bhanga Kirtan, Harinam Sankirtan, Bhajan Sandhya, a feast, a procession and other devotional activities were carried out through the whole day.
