Mathura/Vrindavan, 2017.03.22 (VT): An illegal slaughterhouse and twenty-eight odd meat shops were closed down in Mathura on Wednesday. The crackdown was launched after a high-level meeting chaired by Shri Chandrakant, the Divisional Commissioner of Agra.
The slaughterhouse was being operated very close to Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Lord Krishna at Manohar Pura in Mathura. Sixteen meat shops on the Daresi Road were closed down, while twelve wooden kiosks were demolished at the machli fatak near the railway crossing.
The Vrindavan Police also raided illegal meat shops being operated near the CFC area, but they couldn’t find any meat, fish or egg in some of the shops which were known for selling non-vegetarian food. Some shopkeepers closed the shutters of their shops in fear of the raid. The large refrigerators kept at those shops were also checked, but no trace of meat was found. Perhaps the shopkeepers had prior information of the police raid. The raid was led by the City Magistrate.
The police have also raided illegal meat shops in other areas of Vraja.
Closure of illegal slaughterhouses was a major issue of the BJP in the recent assembly elections and was highlighted by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and BJP president Amit Shah during their campaigning.
The Brajwasis and saints have been demanding a ban on the illegal sale of non-vegetarian food in Vrindavan, but till now, officials had turned a deaf ear towards their demands.
The stern measures by the new government have found support from devotees, activists and pilgrims who were running a campaign against illegal slaughterhouses in Braj, and sale of non-vegetarian food in Vrindavan.
The illegal slaughterhouses mostly deal with buffalo, though some are also known to kill cows and bullocks. Slaughtering of the cows has been legally banned in Uttar Pradesh since 1955, under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act.
