Mathura, 2017.05.20 (VT, AU): Mathura police this morning arrested six suspects in the controversial murder-robbery of a jeweller in Mathura.
It was reported that the arrest was made in an encounter near Ratankund in Mathura. Stolen goods have also been recovered. The main suspect, Rakesh alias Ranga, has been apprehended, along with suspected accomplices Kamesh alias Chini, Ayush, Neeraj, Chotu and Vishnu.
After the murder-robbery occurred four days ago, police were accused of failing to respond in a timely fashion although there were officers in the vicinity. Several officers have since been suspended. Traders are outraged and continue to fear for their lives. A three-day protest placed an immense amount of presure on police to solve this case.
First, the marketplace of Mathura closed down. The next day, Vrindavan businesses shut in protest, and yesterday, Govardhan markets were closed. Not only that, but jewellery shops accross Uttar Pradesh shut their doors in solidarity yesterday. In Mathura alone there has been an estimated loss of about 400 crore due to the complete shutdown of the jewellery market since Monday.
