Maant/Mathura (VT, AU): Authorities suspect polluted groundwater may be the cause of the diarrhea epidemic which has killed at least thirteen in the district over the past few days.
Groundwater samples have been taken for testing from the villages of Surir Kala, Surir Bijau, Parsoti Gadhi, Prem Nagar, Sirela, Irauli Junnardar, Harnaul, Bharat Nagariya, Jarara, Bera, and Auhawa.
The Khadya Suraksha Vibhag (Food Safety Department) suspects groundwater pollution is the most likely cause of the outbreak.
The departments’ head doctor, Dr. BK Rathi, said that an unlicensed ice factory in Maant, which uses the suspect water, has been shut down, and the owners will be held accountable for any negligence. Additionally, the ice storage bins were found to be full of rust.
