Vrindavan, 2017.05.25 (VT): The death toll following the recent outbreak of severe diarrhea has climbed to 14. Most of the dead are children, and hundreds more have fallen ill. The outbreak has been attributed to contaminated ice from snow cones (chuski), and polluted drinking water.

In the affected villages, water samples were taken in for testing. Water from the twenty-two villages tested was found to be unfit for human consumption. The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level of the water in these villages is extremely high.

Such high TDS levels can be caused by agricultural and residental runoff, soil contamination and discharge from industrial or sewage treatment plants.

Chlorine tablets are being distributed in the village. The higher level of groundwater seems to be most affected. Many of the current handpumps have been closed and new ones will be installed with access to water deeper underground.
