- Agra divisional commissioner has directed the admin to ensure that no men between 18 and 30 years of age cover their face in public
- The men are also barred from wearing helmets while walking on the road
Agra, 2017.05.30 (Aditya Devi, TNN): After a spate of murders rocked Agra and the Mathura-Vrindavan belt in recent weeks – in one case two jewellers were shot dead by robbers who looted their showroom – Agra divisional commissioner K Rammohan Rao has now directed the administration to ensure that no men between 18 and 30 years of age cover their face in public. “Even if it is very hot”, no males will be allowed to screen themselves with cloth. Also, they should not wear a helmet while walking on the road. Women and girls have been exempted.
The official said such people often commit crime. “I have no problem if women and the elderly are covering their faces with scarves in public, but [young] men should not be doing this, even if it is quite hot weather. They should also not wear a helmet and walk on the road. All the attackers in the Mathura case covered their faces,” Rao told TOI.
Treading with caution, the divisional commissioner promptly added that this was not a ‘Tughlaqi farman’ and DMs have asked to ensure monitoring of such “fellows”.
“Young men between the ages of 18 and 30 years are generally the people found committing robberies, chain snatching and other such crimes after covering their faces. I have asked officials to keep a watch on such fellows. We are inviting public views on the matter. People should not be allowed to wear a helmet when they are walking on the road,” he added.
On May 15, two jewellers, Vikas and Megh Agarwal, were shot dead by six masked assailants who violently entered their shop in the Koylawali Gali, in the busy market area of Holi Gate, Mathura and decamped with ornaments worth around Rs 4 core.
Just four days later, a prominent glass industrialist from Firozabad, Sanjay Mittal, was abducted in broad daylight on May 19 from National Highway-2 near Nagla Bhau area. However, seven hours after of the incident, the Firozabad police was able to rescue the industrialist from Tundla’s Basai village.
