New help desk to combat touts at Mathura Station

2017.06.02 (VT): On his recent visit to Agra, UP CM Yogi Adityanath ordered that the problem of touts in Mathura and Vrindavan be addressed. Touts are “guides” who use coercive tactics to attract pilgrims and extort money from them.

Often, such touts linger near the exit of Mathura Junction Railway Station to trap unsuspecting pilgrims. Visitors often have no idea of where to visit when they reach the holy city, and many times the touts take them to fake sites and force them to pay them outrageously high amounts in donations.

To combat this problem, Mathura Junction has resolved to create a help desk for pilgrims. The help desk will offer listings of genuine holy places with contact numbers of the temple management. It will also provide the stories and photographs of various holy places, along with listings of places to stay nearby. The help desk will remain open 24 hours a day.

It is hoped that the help desk will take away the touts’ “business”, effectively making them obsolete.
