Diesel tempo stoppage thwarted by lack of CNG pumps

13.12.17 (VT) The  local Roads and Transport authority (ARTO) is struggling to comply with demands by Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) officials to stop the hundreds of diesel tempos operating in Braj.

ARTO in-charge, Enchandra Gautam said that the the ARTO has stopped issuing permits for diesel tempos, so, any diesel tempos that are still on the road are operating without permits. The officer said that the ARTO will soon launch a campaign to crack down on the illegally running tempos. He said that this has not been done to date because there are no CNG pumps in Mant, Kosi or Nandgaon.

CNG is better for the environment but, as yet, it is not available at most regular petrol pumps. There is CNG no filling station in Vrindavan, so drivers have to go to Mathura to fill up. Vrindavan is 12km from Mathura; Mant is 20km away, Kosi is 40km away and Nandagaon is 50km away.

The push for CNG tempos comes from the need to comply with the regulations of the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) which was set up to stop the damage to the monument due to air pollution. The TTZ is an area of 10,400 sq km around the Taj Mahal. It was established by the Supreme Court of India on December 30, 1996.  The TTZ comprises of over 40 protected monuments, including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. TTZ is so named since it refers to the area around the Taj Mahal and is shaped like a trapezoid.
