The Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority is working on several proposals of the tourism development. The ropeway in Varsana is one of these projects for which the district administration is very hopeful. According to the reliable sources, all the necessary clearances have been obtained for the rope way project. The bid for installing the rope way facility will be called soon.
A good number of pilgrims visit Vraja every year, but the numbers of tourists are considerably less. The pilgrims are only keen to have darshan in the temples and after performing worship they go back to their home. They don’t move around the town, thus the local economy is not much benefitted from their visit.
The MVDA and the tourism department are working on the plans which will attract the tourists also. The rope way will not only take the people on the top of the hill for the darshan of Radha Rani, but the tourists can also enjoy riding the rope way cart, while viewing the villages and hills around Varsana from a height. Since Uttarakhand was carved out from the Uttar Pradesh, there is no other place in the state where the rope way is functioning. Uttarakhand being hilly state has several rope way facilities.
Similarly, a proposal to operate motor boats or house boats on the water reservoir of Gokul Barrage on the Yamuna in Mathura for recreational purposes is being considered. The survey of the Heritage Walk project in Vrindavan is yet to begin. The heritage walk has a big tourism potential, as it will revive the traditional way of visiting the temples and the places of Krishna’s pastimes.
The other ambitious plans include a Rishikesh type hanging bridge on Yamuna and installing a statue like Har ki Paudi. These projects may be supported under the Heritage City Plan of the Central Government and the Pro-poor tourism development scheme of the World Bank.
The Chief Minister announced to develop a ‘Peacock Sanctuary’ in Vrindavan. No land could be identified for this project last year. The nature lovers in Vraja are quite hopeful that the New Year of 2016 will see some concrete development which will revive the ancient ethos of Vraja along with promoting the tourism.
