Braj, 2018.02.19 (VT) In Gokul, people play Holi with Thakurji, who comes out from Nandabhavan and is taken to Murlidar Ghat on the Yamuna where He his smeared with colour and even beaten by some modern day Brijwasi gopis. The tradition is thought to be around 500 years old.
In Govardhan and Radha Kund, children take advantage of narrow alley ways though which millions of pilgrims pass through while on parikrama. In the weeks before Holi, unsuspecting people are likely to be sprayed with coloured water by children on the rooftops.
Holi is considered an auspicious time, however, it is not considered to be the right time for marriage, baby naming ceremonies, etc. The eight days before Holi are called Holashtak, and during this period, it is considered best not to embark on any work with great significance for material life.
