Govardhan, 2018.02.20 (VT) Officers from the UP Government’s Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) took 14 samples of food items from Govardhan shops and issued warnings regarding food safety and purity over the Holi period. Vendors were instructed to keep dustbins so that used plates and cups do not litter the streets.
Braj is famous for sweets such as pera, and tourists are expected to reach record levels over the Holi period, so, regulating food safety standards during this period is not an easy task. Yesterday FSDA officers went from one end of Govardhan to the other collecting samples.
The officers took samples of curd from Baba Tea; Bhavnesh Lassi Bhandar at Jatipura; paneer from Bhola Dairy & Confectionery at Sonkh Road. They took milk samples from Hemant Milk store in Mansi Ganga and Dubbu Milk store and Ghee from Bhola Dairy. Sweets were sampled from Bhagirath Peedawale, Gopal Ji Mithan Bhandar Peda, Banke Bihari Mithan Bhandar, Pandit Ram Kishor Perewale at Dasvisa and Sonu Mithan Bhandar at Jatipura.
Chief Food Safety Officer, VK Raathi, said that the FSDA team is putting special emphasis on the food items that are sold more during Holi such as khoa, Paneer, Ghee and sweets. He said that the inspectors will examine the cleanliness and take samples from shops at railway stations and bus stands. Some village outlets will also be investigated.
During a round of inspections in 2016, the sweets being sold at Jatipura and Daanghaati, to offer to Lord Krishna were found to contain significant amounts of white flower and refined oil in place of milk and ghee. The milk being sold had 30% to 60% water.
