63 year old woman fined and threatened with jail for contempt of court.

Vrindavan, 2018.02.19 (VT) The Supreme Court sentenced Deoki Devi to three months in jail and issued her with a fine of Rs20,000 for making false statements in court and blatantly disregarding the court’s ruling against any construction on a plot of land that was under dispute.

Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta gave the sentence but added that Deoki will not have to serve jail time if she immediately surrenders the land under dispute and removes the illegal construction.

The dispute, which as been running for 37 years, is in relation to a plot of land on Chatikara Road, Vrindavan. One plot of land is owned by Deoki and the adjacent plot is owned by Lalita Saharanji Maharaj, Mahant of Thakur Radhemohanji Maharaj’s Shri Mukunddevacharya Peeth, Topi Kunj, Vrindavan.

Holding Deoki’s conduct to be contemptuous, the judges said, “According to her, she had not raised any construction in violation of the orders of this Court. This statement is obviously false and even her learned counsel could not enlighten us as to how the construction, evident from the photographs, which are not even denied, does not violate the orders of this Court.” Full details here
