Mathura, 2018.03.01 (VT) A statue of Holika will be burnt this evening in Mathura, during a cultural program that will be inaugurated by Mathura by the Mayor and MLA Shrikant Sharma. The Holika statue was installed in Mathura on Vasant Panchami and will be combusted tonight, at midnight.
Holikotsav Sangha’s founder, Madan Mohan Shrivastav said that time the Holika combustion will be done at midnight at Holi Gate. Cultural programs will start from 6 o’clock in the evening and pooja will be held at 8pm. He said that Shri Krishna Sharananand Maharaj, Mathura MLA Shrikant Sharma, DM Sarvagram Mishra, SSP Swapnil Mamgai, Mayor Mukesh Aryandhu and others will launch the program.
This evening, after sunset, Holika Dahan ceremonies will be held in many homes and ashrams. The Holi Puja is performed on Choti Holi on or after sunset. It is the day when Holika was burnt into ashes signifying the burning of all things bad.
In some places, effigies of Halika and Prahlad are placed on the heap of wood. Holika’s effigy is made with combustible material while Prahlad’s is made of non-combustible material. People offer coconut, fruits, chant mantras and seek blessings from Lord Vishnu. Coconuts are placed inside the bonfire and the roasted coconut is later distributed as prasad. The next day, the ashes are collected and are smeared on the limbs as it is considered holy. (read more)
