Vrindavan, 2018.02.28 (VT) Hundreds of widows played Holi together at Radha Gopinath temple on Tuesday. Holi is one of those festivals that help people forget about material discomforts, difference in status and position, and old grudges. Holi is celebrated with most enthusiasm by young people, but, at celebrations at Gopinath temple, 95 year old widows showed that they have not forgotten the joy of playing with colours.
A group of widows also made the journey to Delhi to deliver pots of colour and flowers to PM Narendra Modi’s residence. Sulabh International founder, Bindeshwar Pathak, said that the widows have struck a special bond with the Prime Minister who they feel is like a brother.
Vrindavan is known as a refuge for widows who have been abandoned by their families, so ashrams struggle to provide for so many widows. In many families, widows are treated as a burden, disregarded and called inauspicious. In some families, widowed grandmothers are not even invited to attend celebrations in their own homes. Sulabh International has been working in conjunction with Radha Gopinath temple to bring widows back into mainstream society and has been organizing Holi festivals for widows since 2012.
