Delhi, 2018.03.20 (AA) A day after three AIIMS doctors were killed and four others injured in a road accident on Yamuna Expressway, their colleagues in the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have started a signature petition to have medical facilities or small trauma centres after every 60 to 80 miles on the Yamuna Expressway.
Started by Dr Vijay Kumar, former president, AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, the petition will be sent to President Ram Nath Kovind, PM Narendra Modi and National Highways Authority of India among others. So far, 274 doctors have signed the petition.
“Why can’t small trauma centres be opened on the expressway after every 60 to 80 milestones with big centres with all medical facilities every 200 km,” he said.
These centres can provide timely medical aid to the victims, which is presently absent, he added. The petition asked that patrol security teams be imparted training with life saving measures. He said when fighter jets can land or take off from here, why can’t the same facilities be provided to accident victims.
The Yamuna Expressway cuts down travel time from Delhi to Braj by up to an hour, so is popular with many residents, visitors and taxi companies, however the large number of casualties has lead commentators to call the expressway, “India’s most dangerous stretch of road”
