नवल निकुंज में गुंजन मधुप पिक
विविध सुगंध छींट तन लागी ।

Rijhavata prāṇa pati rādhā baḍabāḡī ||2||

Having enjoyed this Vasanta Holi Play late into the night, now Sri Svaminiju wakes up together with Her Beloved. Her groups of Gopis stretch to the far limits of Vraja Gokul and they are all enamoured of the dust of the Lotus Feet of Sri Krishna, the Upholder of the Sri Girirajji Mountain. [1]

In that fresh Forest Bower bees buzz and cuckoos coo, whilst drops of water of various sweet scents touch Their bodies. The Poet Krishnadas says, “Most fortunate is Sri Radha, the only One Who can fully please Her Lord, Who is Her very life, Who is the crown jewel Supreme Queen of all the groups of these youthful Ladies. [2]

ULAHANE KE PAD
‘Complaints!’

Ulahana” is a complaint or accusation. In the mangala period of the cold season appear the ‘khanditapadas, those expressing the breaking of a Beloved’s promise, those of their broken hearts, hearts that depend on the Lord for fulfillment. Here we see the same kind of mood. How could He dare to go and play Holi with another?

Pada: Rāga Vasaṁta
Poet: Surdas

Sāṁcī kaho manamohana moso
To kheloṁ tuma saṁga horī |
Āju ki raina kahāṁ rahe mohana
Kahāṁ karī barajorī ||1||

Mukha para pīka pīṭhipara kaṁkana
Hiyeṁ hāra vina ḍorī |
Jiyameṁ ora ūpara kachu aure
Cāla calata kachu orī ||2||

Mohi batāvata mohana nāgara
Kahā mohi jānata bhorī |
Bhora bhaye āye hoṁ mohana
Bāta kahata kachu jorī ||3||

Sūradāsa prabhu esī na kīje
Āya milo kahā corī |
Manamāneṁ tyoṁ kata naṁdasuta
Aba āī he horī ||4||

“Tell me truth, O, Krishna, Enchanter of my mind and heart; only then will I play Holi with You. Just where did you stay last night and whom were You with? ||1||

“Your face is stained with pink paan spittle. Your back is marked with the pressing of bangles against it and Your chest bears the impressions of necklace beads pressed hard into it. Your heart is in one place, Your appearance says something else and Your gait is frankly not normal!! ||2||

“You try to justify Yourself, O, Enchanter: do you think I am plain stupid? You come here in the morning and speak to me of togetherness.” ||3||

Surdas the Poet now recounts, “O, my Lord, please do not behave like this. Come, be with me, what is to lose? O, Son of Nanda, let’s do whatever we feel like, after all, it is Holi!!” ||4||
