PALANA
‘Cradle Songs’
These two cradle songs are the perfect example of Sri Thakurji’s viruddha dharmasraya character. [embodying seemingly contradictory qualities] The Vraja Bhava and especially this Spring Season of Holi, is all about meeting one’s Lord Face to Face. He kindly facilitates this by appearing as a sweet child, Who then satisfies the Vraja Devotees’ need to keep Him before their eyes and with them at all times. He manifests according to the devotee’s desire.

“Dear Yashodaji! Why do you never admonish your Son Krishna? You think of Him as beautiful and well-behaved! ||1||
“I went to the banks of the Sri Yamunaji River to fill my water pot. On the way home He blocked my way and would not let me pass. ||2||
“He argued with me and demanded that I pay Him a tax. Then he began to pull on my clothes!” ||3||
[Yashoda replies] “He is still suckled on milk and can only move about by crawling! How on earth could He reach as far as Sri Yamunaji’s Banks? ||4||
“I think you must be joking! He sits in this cradle and has not yet even been weaned! ||5||
[Gopis] “When he grazes the cows He is a Dark and lovely Youth and He goes around behaving like this with everyone.” ||6||
When they see His Face the Gopis feel shy. Surdas states, “The pastimes of this Dark Krishna are unfathomable!”||7||

Sri Krishna, sweet Lad, beautified by the three curves in His Form, is sitting in His cradle in the Forest Bower being swung by the Gopis. ||1||
Seeing the nectarean beauty of this Ocean of Loveliness with such beautiful eyes, the dreamily gorgeous Ladies forget all the pain of separation they have been suffering. In the grove of Ashoka trees on the banks of the Sri Yamunaji River, Sri Thakurji puts His arms around their shoulders. ||2||
The bells on the anklets that adorn His Lotus Feet tinkle sweetly and the Gopis abandon themselves to the sound of the bells that beautify His belt. The Poet Krishnadas now sings, “My Lord is the Youth Who upholds the Sri Girirajji Mountain. His head-to-toe beauty enchants and blossoms with the Nectar of Love.” ||3||
