Vrindavan 2016.04.06 (VT): After the inspection by the Divisional Commissioner, orders were given to the Mathura Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) to demolish unauthorized colonies on the Yamuna floodplain (khadar). This has created a panic situation among the residents, who are now trying to get in touch with the officers at their respective level.

After the petition filed by the activist Madhumangal Shukla with National Green Tribunal (NGT), Divisional Commissioner Mr. Pradeep Bhatnagar gave the orders to MVDA Vice President, Mr. C. P. Singh, and Secretary, Mr. S. B. Singh, to demolish the unauthorized colonies near Yamuna.

Though no action has yet been taken as per the orders from the Divisional Commissioner, residents of Yamuna Khadar were seen reaching out to the officers in MVDA to know their next move.

The Petitioner Mr. Madhumangal Shukla told our correspondent that due to the illegal construction of colonies near Yamuna, the very existence of the river is in danger now. The river also is now flowing a great distance away from its original path.

Mr. Shukla said that due to the illegal colonization from Varaha Ghat till Chamunda Devi temple, much of the river bed has been encroached upon, with extremely negative effects for the health of the river. He also informed that if the MVDA doesn’t act on the orders by the Divisional Commissioner, he will register the complaint with NGT again.
