Vrindavan 2016.04.23 (VT): Despite of high pollution, Yamuna’s surface is looking clean these days as the skimmer machine keeps cleaning the floating waste on a regular basis. This situation will be as it is for the next two months more.
Central Government has given the skimmer machine as an experiment under the Namami Gange project, which provides its service daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Daily cleaning of the river from Swami Ghat to Bengali Ghat results in a clean river surface, but devotees are still facing the problem of bad odor and insects in the water, due to the sewer lines flowing in Yamuna.
Four people are also employed with the skimmer machine to clean the ghats. An estimated 200 kilograms of floating waste is daily removed from the river. Masani and Daula Maula sewer lines are flowing directly into the river causing the river to stink for miles. Chemical waste from the sewer lines has formed a thick layer on the riverbed preventing the ground water from recharging.
The skimmer machine has been working from the past two months and will be continue to do so until June 30th only. After that the Water Resources Department will evaluate the results, which if found good may result in an extension of the skimmer machine project in Yamuna. The issue was first reported in Vrindavan Today two months back, when the process started.
Rajkumar Pappu, a member of the Mathur Chaturvedi Committee, says that Yamuna looks cleaner now because of the skimmer, therefore it should work permanently here. It is just that further initiatives should be taken to clean the chemical layer from the riverbed.
Yamuna ghats planned amid high summers
Considering the pressure from the Chief Minister, a team from the Irrigation Department and from the MVDA were available at Cheer Ghat and Keshi Ghat at 11:30 am on Friday. The took the measurement of the Yamuna banks to be developed and also marked the illegal constructions on the riverfront. As per the instructions from Deepak Singhal (Chief Secretary), district magistrate Rajesh Kumar is preparing a report to be presented to the Chief Minister on April 28th. The report will also incorporate plans for building a hanging bridge on Yamuna, like Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh. Efforts are on to start the process by the end of this month.
