Lucknow, 2016.04.23 (Subhash Mishra, TNN): Having already announced beautification and rejuvenation of river fronts in the temple town of Ayodhya and its famous and historic ghats along river Sarayu, the Samajwadi Party government has now decided to embark on similar projects for other two world famous Hindu pilgrimage sites – holy Varuna river in Varanasi and Vrindavan, the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Chief Minister of State, Akhilesh Yadav
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and irrigation minister Shivpal Yadav would soon go to Varanasi and Vrindavan in Mathura to lay the foundation stone for the prestigious projects. The large-scale beautification of the Hindu heritages by the SP government by inviting global tenders and world class companies is being seen as the ruling SP’s move to counter the allegations that it was ‘overtly pro-Muslims’.
“Prime minister Narendra Modi had promised to the nation that his government would cleanse the Ganga soon, but nothing has been done in the past two years. So, we have taken up this challenge. Since Ganga cannot be cleaned without cleaning Varuna, which falls into it, we have decided to start work on Varuna first,” said irrigation minister Shivpal Yadav.
Under the Vrindavan rejuvenation project, three kilometre river front from Kesi ghat to downstream of river Yamuna has been identified for beautification. The proposal is to find out methods to clean tributaries entering the river and construct interceptor drain to counter overflow of sewer into the river.
