DSC_0002Vrindavan, October 6, 2015: The century old custom of organizing the Saanjhi festival at Brahma Kund was revived again. The eight day long festival was inaugurated by Senior Journalist Shri Ved Prakash Vedic, Divisional Commissioner Shri Pradeep Bhatnagar and the District Magistrate of Mathura Shri Rajesh Kumar. The culture loving people gathered in a big number at Brahma Kund to experience the cultural show. The different pastimes of Shri Krishna were exhibited through the Saanjhi art.
Inaugurating the ‘Saanjhi festival’, the Divisional Commissioner said, “The efforts of the Braj Foundation and others associated with this event are laudable. More efforts should be made to preserve the Braj Culture, as it is being recognized internationally. People from around the world come here to see the tradition and culture of Vraja.
The Braj Foundation’s president Shri Vineet Narain briefed the history of the Saanjhi culture to the Commissioner, the Distirct Magistrate and the Senior Journalist Shri Ved Prakash Vedic. Shri Narain said, “Mr. F.S. Growse, the then collector of Mathura has mentioned about this festival in his book, Mathura, a district memoir. He wrote that a grand cultural festival used to be organized at Brahma Kund during the Pitru Paksha in 19th century.”
“But this 125 year old culture was forgotten as the Brahma Kund itself turned into a ruin. The Kund was restored in 2009 by the Braj Foundation. Now in a bid to revive the festival we have organized the Saanjhi Mela again,” he added.
Braj Foundation’s Public Relation Officer Shri Krishna Saras said that the Saanjhi artists had gotten an opportunity to exhibit their art in this festival. More people will take interest to learn the “Saanjhi making”. He informed that the Saanjhi will be displayed at Brahma Kund till 12th October from 5 p.m to 8 p.m.
