Goushala adopted for improving the ‘desi’ cow breed

Vrindavan, 2016.07.27: Vraja is finally waking up to the importance of its native cow breeds. There is a growing awareness about the nutritional superiority of the milk of the native breeds. Shri Panchayati Gaushala, one of the leading Gaushala of Vrindavan is soon going to breed pure ‘desi’ cows. The Veterinary UniversitDSC_0427y of Mathura will help the Gaushala to realize its dream, as it has entered into an agreement with the Panchayati Gausahala of Vrindavan to provide scientific and technical support to this Gaushala.

Prof. K. M. L Pathak, the Vice Chancellor of the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan evam Gau Anusandhan Sansthan, locally known as the Veterinary University visited Shri Panchayati Gaushala on Wednesday. He visited the facilities for the cows including the cow sheds, cow hospital, cow ambulance, fodder room, sheds for the handicapped cows etc. He personally interacted with the Office bearer and staffs of the Gaushala and gave insights on how to keep the cows.DSC_0500
Pleased with the efforts of the Gaushala, Prof. K.M.L. Pathak announced to adopt Shri Panchayati Gaushala for scientific and technical support. Both the institutions agreed to work together to enhance the production of the milk and improve its quality. Efforts will be made to develop and conserve indigenous ‘desi’ breeds of cows in a holistic and scientific manner. The Managers of the gaushalas would be given proper training in cow keeping and nutrition. Training for preparation of silage (green fodder stored in airtight conditions without being dried and used in the winter) would also be given since it is not only nutritious, digestive and cheap, but animals also like it.DSC_0496
The University will also provide its technical assistance for the health care of the cows. A three member team for guidance in terms of nutrition, breeding, reproduction and medicine has been formed. The team consists of expert in nutrition, gynecology and medicine will visit the Gaushalas twice a month to guide and advise them.
Interacting with the office bearers of Shri Panchayati Gaushala, Prof. Pathak said, “There is a need of societal awareness and cultural sensitivity in Indian Cow’s perspective pertaining to its contribution in the socio –economic sector; thereby creating an innate need for conservation of Indian Cows.” He further added, “The Gaushalas must adopt the action based projects such as selective breeding, bull mother farming, pedigree chart management, research & development and capacity building of farmers, breeders and other gaushalas by providing them with high quality bulls as well as semen.”
Shri C. L. Bhuwalka, the Joint – Secretary of Shri Panchayati Gaushala informed the Vice Chancellor that the green fodder is already being produced in Gaushala’s own fields. The technical assistance is needed how to make it more nutritious. Shri Radha Krishna Pathak, the Secretary of Shri Panchayati Gaushala said that the Gaushala not only take care of its own cows, but provide medical services to the cows outside the Gaushala too.
Dr. Mukul Anand, OSD of the University, Dr. Suresh Dwivedi, Major Ram Kishan, Swami Maheshananda Saraswati, Jagannath Poddar and other members of the Gaushala were present during the visit.
