Mathura, 2016.08.04 (VT): A collection of sculptures from the Mathura museum will be displayed in an exhibition in China. The sculptures of the Gupta period from the Mathura Rajkiya Sangrahalaya, will be exhibited at the art exhibition to be held in The Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City from September 28 of this year.
In an interview with Vrindavan Today on telephone, Dr. S.P. Singh, the Director of the Mathura Museum, said, “The People’s Republic of China signed a cultural agreement under which India will hold an exhibition in China of the art of the Gupta period. As a part of this, the Chinese delegation had been visiting the museum to take photos of Gupta-period sculptures housed at the museum.”
According to Dr. Singh, the delegation, which had previously visited the museum, has proposed nine sculptures from the Gupta period for the exhibition. The list will be finalized on August 19, when delegates from the National Museum, New Delhi, will join the Chinese to visit the Mathura Museum.
“The finalized sculptures will be collected by the National Museum in New Delhi in the first week of September. Then they will be sent to China for the exhibition, which is scheduled to commence from September 28,” added Dr. S.P. Singh.
Around 70-80 sculptures from India, belonging from the Gupta period, are expected to be displayed. The Chinese delegation is visiting various art museums including those in Delhi, Lucknow, Allahabad, Mathura and Bodh Gaya to finalize what will be displayed there.
