Vrindavan, 2016.10.31 (VT): There is no respite from the filthy condition in the holy town of Vrindavan even after the National Green Tribunal penalized the Vrindavan Municipality a few months back. The warning given by the District Officials to the Municipal officials has also remained unaffected.
One can see the garbage lying everywhere in the temple town, which is the faith of hundreds of thousands of people. Garbage is piled up everywhere in the town, and the sewer overflows from the clogged drains and the chocked sewage lines. Residents who pass through the narrow lanes of Vrindavan are apprehensive about outbreak of diseases as garbage is piling up on the road. It is a common scene to see people walking on the road covering their noses. The garbage problem has led to pig menace. The pigs climb the mounds of waste and scatter it further.
The Municipality has become so insensitive that it hasn’t taken any measure to keep the surroundings of the temples clean during the holy month of Kartik. One can see heap of garbage near Radha Damodar Temple, which is the special attraction for the devotees in this month. The condition of the surroundings of the other temples is no better.
A thick blanket of smog envelops the temple town in the evening as the people and the municipal workers find quick fix solution to dispose the garbage by burning it. The big garbage bins installed by the municipality on the main roads, have turned to be the incinerators, as they are not evacuated by the Municipal Dumpers.
The residents alleged that the Municipal Council is doing precious little to maintain cleanliness. Once can see a drove of pigs littering all over the road. Stink emanating from the garbage mounds has made walking on the road difficult.
The sewage system of the town has nearly collapsed, as the sewer can be seen overflowing on the road. The Sewer Pumping Stations and Sewer Treatment Plants are either partially functional or non functional. This was proved in a recent inspection conducted by the District Officials.
The Additional District magistrate Shri Ravindra Kumar and Sub Divisional Magistrate found many irregularities in operating the Sewer Pumping Stations in their recent visit.
After that the officers went to inspect Laxman Shaheed Sewage Pumping Station, where they found no one to operate the pump. When they interrogated a municipal staff, who came after sometime, he cited some technical problem for the non operation of the pump. The officials found that the drain through which the sewer is brought to the pumping station was chocked with silt. It was not cleaned for a long time.
After that they went to inspect the Mukherjee Park and Gyan Gudri Pumping stations. During the inspection they found that the other two Sewage Pumping Stations were also not functioning. Only one municipal worker was present there.
They found heap of garbage lying near the Dak Bunglow, which is a densely populated area. Earlier, the ADM had ordered the municipality not to dump garbage in that particular place.
Infuriated by the irregularities found during the inspection, theADM has recommended the departmental action against the Executive Officer, Junior Engineer and the Sanitary Inspector.
