Vrindavan, 2017.11.11 (VT): Eleven thousand students of Vrindavan formed a human chain on Friday to raise awareness against plastic pollution. Chanting anti-plastic slogans, the children demonstrated across eleven kilometers of the parikrama marg. The event was organized by the newly-formed Braj Tirth Vikash Parishad.
Children from forty local schools participated, including Kanha Makhan, Hanumanprasad Dhanuka, Sandipani Muni School, Prem Mahavidyalay and others.
A number of government officials attended the event, including Shailjakant Mishra, the Braj Tirth Vikash Parishad’s Vice President. Mathura DM Arvind Malappa Bangari, City Comissioner Ujjwal Kumar, Municipal SP Shravan Kumar, and others were also present.
Mr. Mishra was full of praise for the demonstration, saying that similar events should be organized across India to promote awareness of the evils of polythene. This would help bring an end to pollution, he said. City Commissioner Mr. Ujjwal Kumar said that cleaning Mathura-Vrindavan is a priority for the state government, and that Vrindavan will be the first polythene-free town in the country.
Madhumangal Shukla, the petitioner upon whose appeal the NGT banned plastic in Vrindavan, said, “Such demonstrations may be good for publicity to some extent. But the government should spend less time on public awareness campaigns. Instead, they must focus on creating a functional system for managing solid waste in the town.”
“If the government does not do its share of the work, Vrindavan’s true form will remain buried under heaps of plastic and broken promises.” (V)
