Govardhan, 2018.02.27 (VT) Representatives from the Khodal Corporation are set to arrive in Govardhan within a month to survey the area for the new Parikrama tram line, which is set to be completed in a years time.

The tram will not be able to enter Radha Kund, due to lack of space. Its speed will be 30km per hour, which is considered a safe speed, however, it will probably not be of much use to locals wanting to go from one side of Govardhan to the other.

The tram is being promoted as ‘Braj development’ by the Braj Tirth Vikas Parishad. The food zones and amusement park rides that will accompany the tram are sure to make Govardhan a favourite place for children and will create jobs for youth, but, the rickshaw pullers who used to take people around Govardhan in the open air may have to find other employment. After sitting on the tram for 40 minutes and listening to the recording about the importance of the pilgrimage places, people may not end up feeling that they have had the experience of doing parikrama.

Those who want Govardhan to be preserved as a sacred place for Krishna’s devotees are also feeling disappointed with a development strategy that commercializes sacred pilgrimage sites and encourages tourism in place of pilgrimage. As one Vrindavan Today reader commented, “More Disney Land nonsense”.
