Ramkrishna Mission Hospital, serving since 1907

Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama is a branch centre of the world-famous Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math. Swami Vivekananda established Ramakrishna Order (Religious Trust) in Kolkata more than a century ago in the name of his Guru, Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Dev, with the motto ‘Atmano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha’-‘For Liberation of the self and for the welfare of the world’.

Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, Vrindaban had its humble beginning in 1907, as a small homo eopathic dispensary to serve the poor and needy local people and pilgrims, in the spirit of “Serving God In Man” as envisioned by Swami Vivekananda, on the bank of holy river Yamuna at Kala Babu Kunj (the house owned by Sri Balaram Bose, an householder disciple of Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna).

The hospital was inaugurated by Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru the First Prime Minister of India in 1963 in the presence of His Holiness Srimat Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj and Srimat Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj the 10th and the 13th President respectively, of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.

As the number of patients increased, the Sevashrama had to be shifted from ‘Kala Babu Kunj’ to ‘Pani Ghat’, also on the bank of river Yamuna. However, during rainy seasons the river water used to inundate the Hospital campus. Hence, the Sevashrama was again shifted in 1963 to its present location on the Vrindaban-Mathura road (the road is now named ‘Swami Vivekananda Marg’).

Since the modest beginning, it has gradually grown to its present stature of 165-bedded Charitable Hospital offering medical service including surgery, blood, diet and various medical tests to all the poor patients and also to patients in remote rural villages through its Mobile Medical Unit, free of cost. It was Swami Vivekananda’s heartfelt desire to serve the patients with devotion considering them as “Rogi Narayana”.
